First Prize: Summalux Technologies

Eric Eisele, College of Engineering

Demand for environmentally friendly indoor lighting is growing rapidly. Summalux Technologies unique fixtures improve and enhance the lighting effects of today's solar daylighting systems, thereby adding value to each system and stimulating demand for such systems. Any building with sun exposure can be retrofitted to use these technologically advanced fixtures.

Second Prize: Rosebud: Tween Undergarments

Christine Bugg, Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design
Jaime Hazley, Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design

Rosebuds is a retail store hoping to reach the untapped market of tween undergarments and loungewear. Studies show that 75-80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, and are completely unaware. By educating young girls on the importance of wearing the correct bra size and encouraging tweens to embrace their body type we hope to make ill fitting undergarments a thing of the past.

Third Prize: Microstructure Sensitive Design of Materials

Siddhartha Pathak, College of Engineering
Marko Knezevic, College of Engineering
Wanting Hu, LeBow College of Business
Zhen Cai, LeBow College of Business

Microstructure Sensitive Design (MSD) will be formed as a startup company specializing in identification of new engineering materials (currently metals) and optimizing the processing routes for the development of these materials.

The company has developed software (also known as MSD) that can guide a potential customer in the rigorous design of a processing recipe to meet a set of designer specified properties.

"The Leader of the Band: A Metaphor for Entrepreneurial Leadership"

Few metaphors offer a richer parallel to entrepreneurial leadership than that of the musician/writer/composer/bandleader. Success as a musician requires creativity that is grounded in tested music theory. For a song to be successful it should have a unique and original sound that captures the unique style of the musician. It is not enough for the musician to randomly build a collage of musical notes and chords. Not all chords or notes go together. It is important for the writer or composer to first understand the basics, then to create an original sound from within those tested parameters. The ability to envision, plan, collaborate, improvise and create pace and tempo are all important, ultimately creating a song that communicates the musician's vision at an emotional level to the listener.

Success as an entrepreneurial leader requires creativity and a focused agility grounded in tested business principles. Entrepreneurs frequently find themselves wearing the hat of musician, writer, composer and bandleader, all at the same time. Faced with limited resources, they need to rely on the instincts and skills of many to compete, and the ability to improvise often can mean the difference between success and failure.
