Center for Corporate Governance

The mission of Drexel University's LeBow College of Business Center for Corporate Governance is to conduct research, generate scholarly and practical commentary, and affect coordinated efforts between the academic and business communities identifying best practices in business governance and advocating excellence in corporate governance policies.

The Center for Corporate Governance interacts with the business community, acting as a forum for the open exchange of ideas supported by research. The Center is a resource for practical solutions to governance issues facing directors and senior management.

About Corporate Governance

Enron, WorldCom and other scandals made a big splash in recent times, but the subject of effective corporate governance is not new to academia: political economist Adam Smith was writing about the subject in the 18th century.

Today, the subject is relevant to more people than ever. At its core, governance is not just intended to satisfy government regulations – it is dynamic leadership to enhance value, transparency that reduces the cost of capital, excellence in pay for performance, and all of the questions that promote an optimal set of checks and balances and ensure that the right questions get asked at the right times.

"Corporate governance is the most exciting area of business today," says Dr. Ralph A. Walkling, Stratakis Chair in Corporate Governance and Accountability and executive director of the Center. "in the headlines daily. It's extremely relevant, and it directly affects shareholder value."

LeBow College of Business Dean Dr. George P. Tsetsekos says that corporate governance is "a central focus infused in LeBow College's academic programs, research and service to the business community."

Drexel continues to be at the forefront in the thorough examination of corporate governance issues. Drexel University President Dr. Constantine Papadakis says that "through the latest academic research, our center for corporate governance is a catalyst in the development of best practices for corporate responsibility."

About the Stratakis Chair

The Stratakis Chair is named for Christopher '51 and Mary Stratakis, who had the foresight to recognize the importance of corporate governance and accountability and to support LeBow's inclusion of it as a pillar of a complete business curriculum.
