One of the biggest challenges an entrepreneur faces is funding their startup. Potential investors want to know the company has value before investing. What can a budding entrepreneur do to get the business to the point that it has commercial viability before going to a funding source?

This Entrepreneurial Skills Workshop, led by a three-time successful professional services and consumer products entrepreneur, takes a first-person case study approach to teaching ways to bootstrap a company. Attend this session to learn ways an entrepreneur can create company value through customer deposits and vendor payables, personal capital, commercial banks, angel investors, and professional money.

Thomas Bonney is founder and managing director of CMF Associates, a financial consulting, staffing, and executive recruitment firm based in Philadelphia, Pa., and Shanghai, China. Bonney founded CMF in 2002 and has grown the business from a one-man agency to a successful consulting enterprise serving private equity, middle market and small cap public companies.

Bonney's strong foundation in client service began with eight years in the Philadelphia and London offices of Deloitte & Touche, where he was a recognized expert on matters concerning European and American business, SEC reporting and specialized accounting issues. From there, he was a partner in Polaris Consulting & Information Technologies and served as president of the 40-person technology consultancy practice before brokering the sale of the company in 2000. In 2004, Bonney joined several other executives to start Brazilian rum company LEBLON, developing a business strategy and financial plan and raising $23.0M in capital to launch this now successful brand.

Bonney is also committed to local higher education and is an adjunct professor at Temple University, where he teaches a case study course in business strategy to graduating seniors. He has also designed and teaches a financial management and accountability module to new entrepreneurs at Drexel University's Baiada Center.

Since 2005, Bonney has served on the board of directors for specialty pharmaceutical company NovaDel Pharma (AMEX:NVD). He is also chairman of the company's Audit Committee.

In 2006, Bonney was selected as the Mid-Atlantic regional winner of the Financial Executive of the Year Award, sponsored by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and Robert Half International. He was selected from hundreds of executives nominated across the U.S. for exceptional achievement in the finance and accounting fields.

A frequent speaker on various business topics, Bonney has had numerous articles published in local and national magazines on subjects including private equity and middle-market financial and operational management best practices and practical applications of information technology. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. A University Scholar at Penn State University, he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
