| Description: | Description: One of the areas of rapid change in the energy business is the development of smart grids: the fusion of information based technologies with the electric energy infrastructure. To develop these smart grids, it is necessary to examine a core problem: on-line management of distributed resources, specifically controllable loads, on the power system through new and innovative operating techniques. These techniques utilize remote data collection and fast analysis to minimize operational cost and losses while maintaining system security in real-time through frequent system reconfiguration. Present-day issues as it relates to this program will be discussed in addition to addressing solution methodologies currently being argued. An update of an actual energy management system (EMS) currently being developed at Drexel University will also be presented. Learning Objectives: 1. Background and motivation behind EMS's for smart grids. 2. Problem/design statement for managing energy resources in smart grids. 3. Past, present and future methodologies for EMS's 4. Example application of EMS: Drexel University's “Smart Campus” Microgrid Presented by: Chika Nwankpa, Ph.D., Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Drexel University's College of Engineering Dr. Nwankpa received his Magistr Diploma from St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Russia and his doctoral. degree in the electrical and computer engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He is the Director of the Center for Electric Power Engineering (CEPE) at Drexel University and his research interests are in the areas of power systems and power electronics modeling and experimentation. Cost is $60.00 with discounts available for Drexel Alumni and Graduate Students Call 215-895-0578 for further details. Food and drink will be served.
