The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship Presents

The Power of Failing Quickly: Transforming Ideas into Innovations

Workshop Leader:
Jay Tapper, Serial Entrepreneur

Wednesday, February 8, 2012
5 - 7 pm
Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship
3225 Arch Street, Ground Floor
Drexel University's Main Campus

The entrepreneur is the engine of all innovation. From Edison to Steve Jobs, to the local deli storeowner--it's YOUR passion and creativity that ensure your ultimate success. Mistakes will and should happen; it's about learning from these challenges while staying true to your original core conviction. Edison famously said that he “didn't so much as learn how to make a light bulb, as he learned 2,019 ways not to make one”. Einstein said: “Never be afraid to try something new…. Remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic”. True innovation requires a Puritanical conviction in persistence, creativity, and embracing the need for a new approach, and perhaps a new business model.

Attend this workshop to learn from both historical examples and personal successes (and failures) how to turn ideas into innovations.

Jay Tapper is a serial entrepreneur who has been starting companies since the age of 16, when he founded his first business, The Window Viper, a residential window cleaning business. He has extensive experience in Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) innovation, IP strategy, overseas manufacturing, and employs an Open Innovation approach wherever possible to maximize resources. He is the recipient of over 40 commercialized patents and lectures regularly on overcoming inherent innovation hurdles to senior CPG RD and brand leaders. He works closely with a tight knit group of product inventors, RD houses, design firms, investors, and a Chinese manufacturing partner, to facilitate his many ventures.

Jay was the CEO of Cap Candy; Tapper Candies; Saybrook Products; and Zuko LLC, and successfully sold those businesses to leading Fortune 500 companies. He has also been involved in many other successful CPG start-ups, notably Dr. John's Products, which was founded and run by his stepfather, John Osher. Dr. John's created the Spin Brush, the world's most successful battery powered toothbrush and was successfully sold to P&G in 2000.

In 1993, Jay Tapper founded Cap Candy, a division of Cap Toys, and coined the term “interactive candy” to support Cap's introductions of the world's first Interactive Candy products: Spin Pop® and Laser Pop®. In 1995, Jay helped orchestrate the sale of Cap Toys to Russ Berrie and then subsequently left to start his own candy company. Hasbro purchased the Cap Toys from Russ Berrie one year later. The global interactive candy category is now in excess of one billion dollars annually.

In 1996, Jay founded Tapper Candies. His signature product, The Original Goody Bag® sold over 10 million units in the first year on the market. In 1999, the company was sold to Hallmark Cards Inc where it served as the foundation for Hallmark's expansion into themed party favors and birthday entertainment.

In 2001, Jay was one of the founders, and President, of Saybrook Products LLC. The company's first product, The Dish Doctor™, was sold to Proctor and Gamble (P&G) in 2003 and served as the launching pad for P&G innovation expansion in the dish liquid space.

In 2005, Jay founded Zuko LLC, a company focused on mass market personal care and HPC innovation. Unilever PLC acquired select assets of Zuko LLC in 2005 and subsequently launched a number of global initiatives, such as the Axe Bullet, Dove Vitalizer, and the Dove's Men Care skin care line. Jay continues to work with Unilever on new product development, across multiple categories, utilizing an Open Innovation approach to achieve these goals.

Currently, he is the founder and managing partner of three new CPG focused companies, all of which are in varying RD product development phases. Jay received his B.A. in Colonial, American History, from James Madison College, Michigan State University. He also studied International Relations at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, England.

February 29, 2012
8:30 a.m. - Noon (Continental breakfast available at 8:15 a.m.)
Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship
3225 Arch Street, Ground Floor
Drexel University's Main Campus

Getting the right people on the bus is one of the greatest challenges for every entrepreneurial venture. Limited financial resources often compounds this challenge and makes it even more imperative to hire and train folks who are a good fit and provide value to the organization.

Building on a 35-year foundation of research by Dr. Janice Presser and Dr. Jack Gerber, the Gabriel Institute created and validated technology that measures how people interact in teams. The resulting TGI Role-Based Assessment™ (RBA) incorporates a range of predictable individual and group performance variables that have not been directly measured by other forms of assessment:

• Coherence: expressed as positive, flexible, constructive teaming behaviors
• Role: the affinity for specific modes of service to an organization
• Teaming Characteristics: individual styles of responding and relating to others
• Job-fit: the right people performing the right tasks
• Role-pairing: known, replicable synergies between specific Roles

Attend this Seminar in Entrepreneurial Excellence to:

 Choose better people!
 Build better teams!
 Drive better performance!

This Seminar in Entrepreneurial Excellence is a two-part experience. Participants will complete the Gabriel Institute Role-Based Assessment™ online by February 27. A Self-Directed Report that outlines areas in which they excel and areas where improvement would be beneficial will be generated. These reports will be brought to the seminar on February 29 and the results will be discussed to reveal to participants the process for adding the right team members to help their growing businesses succeed.

Instructor:

Bruce H. Rubin is a principal in the consulting company BHR Global Associates, Inc.; a partner in the consulting company Nenko Advisors International, LLC; and an agent for The Gabriel Institute and its Role Based Assessment. Bruce provides expertise and assistance in the areas of global sourcing, supply chain management, product development, logistics support, as well sales and marketing support.
Bruce has over thirty years experience in product development and introduction, supply chain management, purchasing, inventory management and systems implementation, and has developed forecasting models and led the materials planning and purchasing efforts for two mid-sized consumer products companies. He has worked with most major retailers in the US, including Wal-Mart, Lowes, and Kmart, as well as their supply chain organizations, to develop new products. He has personal contacts in China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Korea, Germany, India and Israel for sourcing and product development.
Bruce has taught APICS certification classes and is a speaker at regional conferences on supply chain and materials planning. He holds a BS in Economics from Fairleigh-Dickinson University and an MBA in Business Management from Temple University.
