LeBow RSS Feeds

What is RSS?

RSS stands for really simple syndication and is a customizable content delivery method. Subscribing to RSS feeds allows you to stay up to date on news and events that are going on at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business from any RSS aggregator (see below).

Using RSS puts you in control of the content you receive. So unlike email subscriptions you can subscribe and unsubscribe to any RSS feed with ease.

There are literally thousands of sites that offer RSS feeds. This means you can read news from Philadelphia Business Journal, view your friends latest blog posts, get the latest headlines posted on the LeBow website and learn about upcoming LeBow events all in the same place.

What is an RSS Aggregator?

my.yahoo.com rss aggregator

RSS aggregators are software or websites that allow you to manage and read your RSS subscriptions. Website RSS aggregators are the most popular because they allow you to login from any computer and read your subscriptions. The biggest companies on the internet all offer fully customizable RSS aggregation webites including: Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft.

In addition to these there are sites that specialize and only offer RSS content aggregation which include: Bloglines and NetVibes.

If you would rather use desktop software for your RSS reading there are plenty of options for that as well. Newz Crawler and FeedDemon are two that work on windows. If you are a Mac OS X user then Newsfire and NetNewsWire are two of the more popular ones to consider.

If you use Safari 2.0 or Firefox for your web browser these both have RSS readers built into the browser.

Subscribing to a RSS Feed?

There are numerous ways for you to subscribe to an RSS feed. Clicking on any RSS tag provides a link to that feed. All you need to do to subscribe to that feed now is copy that url and paste it into any news aggregotor. For example, if you where to wanted to add a LeBow RSS feed to your my.yahoo.com page you would follow the following steps:

  1. Click on a RSS tag, this will bring you to a page that looks like this
  2. Now copy the URL to your clipboard. The url will be something like this: http://www.lebow.drexel.edu/Newsroom/storiesRSS.php?NewsType=1
(Conversely you can Right-Click on the RSS tag and choose "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link to Clipboard"
  3. Go to http://my.yahoo.com and Sign In or create and account if you do not have one.
  4. Above the news items you'll see a link for "Add Content", click on that
  5. In the "Find Box" next to the "Find" button there is a link: "Add RSS by URL" click on that
  6. Now simply paste the url into the URL box and click Add and you are finished

While adding a feed to every aggregtor may be a little different, the general concept is the same and each site should provide instructions for how to do so.

In addition adding content this way. Certain pages do provide links which will automatically add the current page's news to your my.yahoo.com page or your bloglines page. If you use Safari or Firefox you can look for the Blue RSS feed link in the URL bar or the Orange RSS Indicator in the bottom right corner of the browser window to respectively subscribe to the current feed and read them from the browser.
