Managing Global Innovation: Engineering Management

Program Description:

Leading global teams and developing new customer markets are essential to your company's competitive advantage. Managing Global Innovation: Engineering Management is a four course High Potential Management Development program focused on launching new ventures, leading organizational change, assessing leadership skills, and cultivating cross-cultural relationships in the global marketplace. Each course is delivered over a 5-week period and a total of 30 hours of instruction time.

LeBow College's Graduate Certificate programs are delivered by Drexel University faculty who teach in our internationally recognized Master's degree programs.

Target Audience:
This program is designed for middle and senior level engineering professionals who want to improve their management effectiveness, leadership style and overall business understanding. This program will enable them to complement their technical expertise with the knowledge needed for managerial roles, and prepare them for career growth opportunities within their industry.

Undergraduate Degree

Cost:
$2,670 per module. Includes course fees, materials and for face-to-face classes parking and refreshments.

Requirements for Graduate Credit/Certificate Awards:
Complete the entire four course series* and receive a Certificate of Professional Development. Upon completion of individual courses or the entire program, participants may earn graduate-level course credit which can be applied toward selected Drexel University MBA or M.S. programs. A formal graduate application must be submitted. Continuing Education Units (CEU) credits and Continuing Professional Educational (CPE) credits may also be applicable. Successful completion of the four course program can earn the participant 144 CPE credits in the areas of Accounting, Business Management and Organization, Economics, Finance, Communications, and Social Environment of Business.

Course Details

*Business Basics Overview
Delivery: Classroom, 8 hours

(This course does not qualify for credits but will prepare the participant to address business concepts covered in the program.)
Students will learn to deal interactively in two critical areas: 1) planning and shaping the external outreach of a company through marketing, branding, competitive strategy, and innovation and 2) anticipating and responding to major threats, shifts, and forces in the marketplace - including crisis. Students will also analyze key corporate-wide, growth-driving, actions and tactics used today - such as planning, positioning, differentiation and branding, market selection, innovation, competition, crisis management, and the role of the media. The purpose of this short course is to introduce students to broad business topics and show how they relate to the functions of an entire organization.

MODULE 1
EMGMT 531/FIN 601 – Essentials of Engineering Management: Finance & Evaluation for Technical Professionals
Delivery: Blended (classroom and online)
This course introduces engineering professionals to the content, methodology, and application of computer-based accounting systems that support the decision-making process at all organizational levels. It presents an accelerated treatment of the principles of financial valuation and the tools and techniques that facilitate financial decision-making in the areas of financing, investment, working capital, and operating decisions. Topics include: interpreting financial statements; assessing an organization's financial environment; calculating risks and returns on investment; discounted cash flows, bond and stock values, derivatives and the cost of capital; and understanding the key elements of international finance. This course provides a review of economic analysis, with emphasis on those phases of major interest to engineering administration. The course covers the calculation of economic equivalence, inflation and the purchasing power of money, decision making among alternatives, evaluation of public activities, and estimation of costs. Special focus is given to advanced problems in planning, controlling, and directing engineering and other operating costs through budgeting and analysis of cost data. Students will develop an approach to judging profitability, liquidity, and the organization structure of the engineering functions are studied.


MODULE 2
ORG 631 – Leading High Performance Organizations
Delivery: Classroom

Leading High Performance Organizations will examine important issues faced by all managers. Topics include leadership style; developing a culture of execution; creating a sense of ownership in your employees for their areas of responsibility; implementing a continuous improvement philosophy; and other topics to help create sustainable competitive advantage. Students will learn what works and what does not work from examples, articles and the shared experience of classmates. Classroom learning can immediately be applied to job performance.


MODULE 3
BUSN 698 - Managing Innovation to Achieve Business Growth
Delivery: Classroom
Innovation represents new value for customers and is a compelling source of competitive advantage for business. For innovation to be successful, it must be managed as a business process. This course presents an effective model for integrating and managing innovation. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of managing innovation in engineering organizations. Key topics that will be covered during the course are:

  • Key components needed in an R&D organization to support business growth; a holistic view
  • Innovation processes and the factors that make them the most effective
  • Success factors for ensuring innovation – the engine for growth
  • Role of productivity in innovation and how to increase it in an R&D organization

MODULE 4
POM 601 - Global Operations Management
Delivery: Classroom or Online

This course is an introduction to the fields of production and operations management (POM). Production and operations activities, such as forecasting, capacity and inventory, scheduling activities and assuring qualities will be discussed from the perspective of supply chain. The philosophy of Just-In-Time (JIT) and responsive manufacturing/service is highlighted.
