Under the accountancy law that becomes effective in Pennsylvania in 2012, an individual interested in practicing as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) will be required to earn the equivalent of 150 semester credit hours of university education with 36 semester-credits in accounting subjects. The new M.S. in Accounting program at Drexel LeBow satisfies this Pennsylvania state certification requirement.
If students are interested in taking the CPA examination in another state (e.g., Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland), they will need to work in conjunction with the relevant State Board of Accountancy and the Accounting Department to ensure their eligibility to sit for the CPA examination in their desired state.
The MS in Accounting program is designed for students who have completed an undergraduate degree in Accounting. The program offers students the opportunity to obtain the technical knowledge, analytical skills, and communication skills required to serve as ethical and effective accounting professionals.
A CPA Review Course is required for completion. The 10-week class on the Philadelphia campus taking place during the winter quarter will offer students all the tools they need for passing this increasingly difficult exam. Upon completion of the program, students will be qualified to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination.
The program:
All applicants must have earned a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to be considered for admission to graduate programs at Drexel University. A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required for consideration. However, candidates that have a non-accounting degree with sufficient coursework / credits in accounting may also be considered. Degrees earned abroad will be evaluated and must be deemed equivalent.
The Committee reviews applications based on undergraduate record, GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) score, quality and quantity of professional experience, clarity of career goals, professional references, statement of purpose and professional resume. Students whose native language is not English and who do not hold a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution are required to take and submit a score from ToEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Students who earned a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution or have worked full-time in an English-speaking country for more than two years may have this requirement waived.
Students with undergraduate accounting degrees from non-AACSB accredited schools and non-U.S. schools will be reviewed based upon the curriculum completed and its comparability to the LeBow undergraduate program. Students from non-AACSB accredited schools and non-U.S. schools may be required to take additional prerequisite courses prior to admission to the program. Further, while students with undergraduate degrees in accounting from non-U.S. schools may be eligible for admission to the program, completion of the program will not necessarily make them eligible to sit for the CPA examination. These students will be responsible for assessing whether their academic backgrounds will make them eligible to sit for the CPA examination. Educational credentials earned outside the United States must be evaluated by one of the following professional credentials evaluation organizations:

Students with undergraduate degrees in areas outside of accounting can be considered for admission to the program only after they acquire the necessary prerequisite undergraduate accounting and/or business courses.
