Curriculum

A degree in Economics will give you knowledge of the workings of the market system and major economic institutions, economic policy, and development. Economics is a freestanding degree with more requirements in the liberal arts and sciences than LeBow College’s other business programs, as well as a deeper, more complete coverage of economics than any other curricula can provide.

The economics program is very flexible, allowing you to customize your course selections and choose a coordinating non-business field of study to supplement your degree.

The student who enrolls in the economics major will:

  • Complete a core of 30 credits in basic economics and statistics.
  • Choose 20 credits more of electives from economics and closely related areas.
  • Complete a flexible program of liberal art and science studies of about 40 credits, common to many majors at Drexel.
  • Take advantage of the in-built flexibility and choose a coordinate field from other existing majors and minors at Drexel

What would you do with an economics degree?

Economics majors often:

  • Work in local economic development as employees of local government, banks and firms.
  • Go to law school. Linking an Economics major with a minor in political science or philosophy would be an excellent choice.
  • Work in business management and consulting and are successful as entrepreneurs.
  • Work in a research capacity in banks, government and universities. A minor in mathematics would be a good choice for this pursuit. Most people who do this also obtain a graduate degree.
  • Work in governmental and international agencies, such as the CIA, World Bank, IMF and USAID, monitoring developments in countries around the world. A minor in international area studies would be a good complement for these pursuits. A professional master's degree in public administration or public policy might help too, and the economics major is an excellent preparation for these programs.
  • Work in business journalism, an increasingly specialized field of writing and reporting. For the budding business writer, the economics major would be linked with a communications minor.

When you reach the end of one of LeBow College’s programs, we provide Capstone: Reflective Experience for Seniors in writing and business. These experiences will help you to analyze and reflect on what you have learned throughout your course of study.

If you just think the economics major might be for you -- contact Ms. Sarah Haley at 215-895-2123 to arrange a sit-down with a member of our faculty.
