A Career Perspective on Turnover, Performance and Leadership Effectiveness Scott E. Seibert
This talk will discuss two manuscripts in progress by Professor Seibert and his colleagues that explore the important role that career processes play in traditional organizational behavior outcomes, such as job performance, turnover and leadership effectiveness. Previous work (Kraimer, Seibert, Wayne, Liden & Bravo, 2011, JAP, 96:3; Seibert, Kraimer, Holtom, & Pierotti, 2013, JAP, 98:1) has provided evidence for the effects of career shocks and perceptions of organizational support for career development on employee performance, turnover and career decision making. The first paper discussed will test an Image Theory explanation for these relationships. The second paper will examine the effects of formal and informal forms of career development on the level of human and social capital held by first-line supervisors and their subsequent leadership effectiveness and promotability. The author argues for a renewed focus on career issues in the OB/HR literature.
