Students Tackle Global Issues at UN Summit

From seats typically occupied by world leaders, students from LeBow and across the University participated in the UNA-USA Global Engagement Summit at the United Nations headquarters. The group, made up of 54 students from LeBow’s Global Learning Community and OIP’s Global Engagement Scholars, sat on the floor of the UN General Assembly Hall and actively participated in discussions surrounding today’s pressing global issues.

Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, was one of the many distinguished speakers at the event. When addressing the young people in attendance, he said, “You’ve got the strongest voice in this country, so please use it, and don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t!”

“At Drexel I have been exposed to the ever-present and ever-developing global mindset that radiates across campus,” says undergraduate economics major Victoria Tran. “Understanding that this is a pivotal time for the world and the U.S.-UN relationship, participating in the Global Engagement Summit has complemented my academic studies and has been an eye-opening experience.”

Tran’s experience not only contributed to her global perspective, but helped give focus and energy to her areas of focus in her LeBow education. She says that the Summit “reinforced why I feel passionately about impact investing and the private sector’s role in creating social change.”
