LeBow and NABA Offer Accounting Awareness Program for High Schoolers

February 05, 2009

The National Association of Black Accountants and Drexel University's LeBow College of Business are partnering up to offer the Accounting Awareness Program (ACAP). ACAP is an innovative career development program designed specifically for minority students who are currently freshmen, sophomores and juniors in high school.  During this summer residency program held Sunday, June 21 through Friday, June 26, 2009, a select group of 20 students will have the opportunity to explore careers in accounting and business via a rigorous class and study schedule, college-level content and networking opportunities, as well as a taste of college life while staying in Drexel University's dormitories.

The primary objective of this full-scholarship program is to increase the number of high school students from under-represented ethnic groups that attend college and major in accounting or business by introducing them to the subject matter through introductory courses in business, accounting, finance, and economics. The program also provides a foundation for financial literacy and the development of interpersonal skills.

Prominent business leaders will share their knowledge and discuss some educational opportunities with ACAP participants. These students will also have the opportunity to experience accounting first-hand through tours of local certified public accounting firms and companies in the private sector, such as Deloitte and PWC, and will also get to enjoy a fun evening at Dave and Buster's.

The program will conclude with a CASE competition, and the winner will be awarded $500 for use toward their accepted college of choice. There will also be a recognition luncheon for students, parents, speakers, and corporate sponsors.
