Does institutional trading activity contribute to market efficiency or drive prices away from fundamentals? Is mutual fund (a type of institutional investor) performance attributed to luck or skill?
To answer these questions, I study institutional trading in various settings. By observing changes in institutional holdings, I examine how institutions react to patent publications announced by companies. In the real estate investment trust market, I research whether institutions follow each other’s trades. I’ve also developed a method for measuring skillful trading and predicting future mutual fund returns.
The data generated by my research have important implications for market participants and policymakers. In the real world, the answers to these questions help fund investors to select mutual funds that will perform well.
