Schilling\, PhD\, Stern School of Business\, New York Un iveristy DESCRIPTION: \n\nAbstract There is considerable research asserting the impo rtance of\nexploratory search versus exploitative search\, however relativ ely\nlittle work examines strategies used to achieve exploratory search.\n How do individuals and firms explore uncharted technological terrain?\nThi s paper extends research on knowledge networks\, cognition\, and\nlearning to propose three main strategies of knowledge creation that\nare more lik ely to result in discoveries that are distant from\nexisting inventions: D eduction\, long search paths\, and synthetic\nrecombination. We test our a rguments using a large and unique dataset\non outlier patents filed at the US Patent and Trademark Office. Our\nfindings suggest that there are sign ificant differences in the\ninventor teams\, assignees\, and search strate gies that result in\noutlier patents. These results have important implica tions for\nmanagers that wish to encourage more exploratory search for\nbr eakthrough innovation.\n\nClick here for more information on Dr. Schilling \n[http://www.stern.nyu.edu/faculty/bio/melissa-schilling].\n DTSTART:20171117T160000Z DTEND:20171117T172000Z LOCATION:Gerri C.
