The embeddedness theory proposes that firms should\nc ultivate a mix of arm’s length and embedded relationships within\ntheir network structure. We revisit this proposition along a\nbehavioral perspec tive. In particular\, we propose that firms may\ndiffer in their motives f or choosing network partners (i.e.\,\ntransactional and relational motives )\, and underscore the importance\nof matching a firm’s network structur e with its behavioral motives.\nUsing the survey data on firm-bank lending relationships collected\nfrom 4240 U.S. firms with fewer than 500 employe es\, we found that only\nfirms that chose their partners based on transact ional motives\nbenefited from balancing arm’s length and embedded relati onships.\nSuch a mix of ties was in fact detrimental to firms that selecte d\ntheir partners with relational motives.\n\nMurat Tarakci is an Associat e Professor of Innovation Management at\nthe Rotterdam School of Managemen t\, Erasmus University.
