 n\nABSTRACT: This paper examines the potential roles of blockchain in\nens
 uring quality\, safety and sustainability in the production and\ndistribut
 ion of food and beverage products. A multiple case study\napproach has bee
 n chosen as the principal methodology. The article\ngives special consider
 ation to mechanisms underlying the impacts of\nblockchain on interfirm gov
 ernance structures in the food and beverage\nindustry. It explains how blo
 ckchain may reduce uncertainty in the\nactions of various supply chain par
 ticipants in this industry. The\narticle shows how blockchain is likely to
  make dependence among supply\nchain partners more symmetric thereby reduc
 ing opportunism. It\nsuggests that by stimulating entrepreneurial opportun
 ities for\ndisadvantaged groups and promoting distributive fairness\, bloc
 kchain\ncan contribute to the sustainability of social systems. The paper\
 nalsodemonstrates how blockchain can help deal with risk situations\nsuch 
 as crisis and emergency response and promote sustainability of\nbusiness m
 odels.\n
