 \n\nABSTRACT: This paper studies the economic impacts of carbon pricing.\n
 Exploiting institutional features of the European carbon market and\nhigh-
 frequency data\, I document that a tighter carbon pricing regime\nleads to
  higher energy prices\, lower emissions and more green\ninnovation. This c
 omes at the cost of a fall in economic activity\,\nwhich is borne unequall
 y across society: poorer households lower their\nconsumption significantly
  while richer households are less affected.\nThe poor are more exposed bec
 ause of their higher energy share and\,\nimportantly\, also experience a l
 arger fall in income. Targeted fiscal\npolicy can help alleviate these cos
