In the 1920s\, a set of\nimmigration laws in the Un ited States imposed quotas based on national\norigin and restricted immigr ant flows. These policies cut immigration\nflows from constrained countrie s to around 150\,000 individuals a year.\nThe effects of this policy chang e are identified in a\ndifference-in-difference framework utilizing the LI FEM\, historical\nlabor survey\, and full count census data. Results indic ate that\nindividuals in areas facing larger declines in immigration are\n observed transitioning into occupations and industries with worse\nassocia ted health measures. Increasing native-born employment in high\nhealth cos t (HHC) positions offset lost immigrant labor leading to no\nchange in HHC employment share. Further\, policy exposure was\nassociated with declinin g average lifespan and increasing mortality\nrates among counties’ worki ng age US-born population.\n DTSTART:20251017T153000Z DTEND:20251017T164500Z LOCATION:Gerri C.
