Since the online environment is essentially a space for\nwritten i nteraction\, electronic networks that attempt to bring human\nimpact to an online course through taped video taped or audio lectures\nmay be less th an ideal reproductions of the face-to-face classroom\nexperience. The onli ne environment requires most interactions to be\ncomputer mediated communi cation (CMC). There are many ways CMC can be\naugmented\, yet most mechani sms do not offer any human impact. Dr.\nMcGeary will discuss an easy and e ffective way to provide some human\nimpact to CMC through use of a tablet computer\, which allows for the\nhand written word to be used in place of the type written word.\n\nDr. Hande Benson\, Assistant Professor in the De cision Sciences\nDepartment\, has been lecturing with the aid of a Tablet PC provided by\nthe Center for Teaching Excellence. A challenge in using t his new\ntechnology is finding a balance between using presentation slides \,\nwhich are too often static\, and the blackboard\, which lends itself\n well to spur-of-the-moment discussions that nevertheless go unrecorded\nby the professor. Although not without a few bumps in the road\, the\ngoal o f finding a balance was accomplished\, with positive feedback\nfrom the st udents. Dr. Benson will share her experiences in preparing\nand presenting course materials for her Operations Management courses\nusing the Tablet PC.\n\nMarcos deArruda\, Instructor in the Finance Department\, has worked with\nvarious emerging technologies to enhance student learning in both f ace\nto face and online teaching environments. He will demonstrate how to\ ncapitalize on the use of Tablet PCs\, Handheld P.C.\, iPods\,\nSmartPhone s\, and Web Video Cameras to develop effective learning tools\nfor courses targeting both online and on campus learners. He will also\ndiscuss the p ros and cons of using such technologies\, and will talk\nabout the resourc es needed for the successful implementation of\nScreenCasts\, Podcasts\, a nd Video Podcasts in the FIN 601 Corporate\nFinance course.\n\nSandwiches\ , salad\, and beverages will be served.\n DTSTART:20060130T161500Z DTEND:20060130T181500Z LOCATION:Pearlstein Business Learning Center\, 3230 Market St\, 405\, Phila delphia\, PA 19104 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
