Gerri C. LeBow Hall\, Room 722 For more information\,\nplease cont act Wenjing Shen at wenjings@drexel.edu.\n\nAbstract Hospitalized patients are at risk of unexpected clinical\ndeterioration\, usually characterized by a disturbance in physiology.\nEarly detection with appropriate respons e can reduce the risk of\nundesired outcomes. Early Warning Scores are wid ely used in hospitals\nto structure the early recognition and provide guid ance to identify\nthe patients who may need additional attention. However\ , there are\nchallenges associated with the current use of Early Warning S cores.\nThere is a lack of standardization in clinical guidelines for\nsel ecting the physiological measures to be included in a score and\ntheir cut -off points. Most published scores include expert opinion\nbased cut-off p oints to assess risk for a specific event. As a result\,\nthe performance of any score depends on the outcome of interest. In\naddition\, the curren tly used cut-off points are not patient-specific.\nOur research involves u nderstanding the heterogeneity of the patient\npopulation in a large healt h care system\, and developing decision\nmodels for patient-centered rapid response. We focus on two types of\nuncertainty: (i) uncertainty in a pat ient’s condition\, and (ii)\nprovider perception-based uncertainty in mo del parameters. This talk\nwill discuss the results of electronic medical records-derived\nMarkovian models for identifying optimal rapid response t eam\nactivation policies.\n\nBiography Muge Capan\, PhD\, is a Research In vestigator at the Value\nInstitute at Christiana Care Health System specia lizing in health\nsystems engineering and patient outcomes research. She e arned her PhD\nin Industrial and Systems Engineering from North Carolina S tate\nUniversity. Her areas of concentration include stochastic processes\ ,\ndecision analysis\, and mathematical modeling with applications to\nmed ical decision making and optimization of hospital operations using\nlarge- scale electronic medical records.\n DTSTART:20141023T150000Z DTEND:20141023T160000Z LOCATION:Gerri C.
