Social Rec ognition and Knowledge Sharing Behavior in a Virtual Community.” DESCRIPTION: \n\nAbstract: We study whether and how symbolic rewards based on social\nrecognition affects the behavior of knowledge sharing in a\nsel f-organized virtual community. We find that a purely symbolic\nreward base d on peer recognition significantly boosts the quantity of\nthe awardee’ s knowledge sharing activity. This effect\, however\, is\nrelatively short -lived. In contrast\, longer-lasting positive effects\nare found for explo ratory and collaborative behaviors: the users who\nreceived the symbolic r eward expand the collective knowledge coverage\nby answering more frequent ly questions in topic areas outside their\ntraditional domains and by prov iding more feedback to other users.\nThere is some indication that this re ward system triggers gaming\nbehavior among the awardees who likely desire a higher-level reward in\nthe system. While potentially leading to an ine fficient distribution\nof collective efforts\, such desires stimulated by the initial reward\nmay also reinforce the reward system as an incentive m echanism to\npromote knowledge sharing within the community.\n DTSTART:20141024T143000Z DTEND:20141024T160000Z LOCATION:Gerri C.
