DESCRIPTION: \n\nAbstract We quantify the effect of container technology on
  transport\ncosts and trade by estimating the modal choice between\ncontai
 nerization and breakbulk shipping using micro-level trade data.\nThe model
  is motivated by novel facts that relate container usage to\nshipment\, de
 stination and firm characteristics. We find container\ntransport to have a
  higher first-mile cost and a lower distance\nelasticity\, making it cost 
 effective in longer distances. At the\nmedian distance across all country 
 pairs\, the box decreases variable\nshipping costs between 16 to 22 percen
 t. The box explains a\nsignificant amount of the global trade increase sin
 ce its inception: a\nquantitative exercise suggests that Turkish and U.S. 
 maritime exports\nwould have been about two-thirds of what they are today 
 in the absence\nof containers.\n
