Working With the Center for Career Readiness

University Career Centers vs Center for Career Readiness

Typically, career centers focus on:

  • Resume and cover letter reviews
  • Interview preparation
  • Career fairs and employer events
  • Job and internship postings
  • General career exploration tools
  • Alumni and employer networking platforms

Rather than emphasizing immediate employment outcomes, LeBow’s Center for Career Readiness (CCR) helps students develop the competencies, experiences, and professional identity needed for long-term success. CCR focuses on intentional skill development and career preparation through:

  • Appointments that are focused on career skill-building (e.g. communication, network construction, professionalism, teamwork, leadership, salary negotiations and decision making), not transactional items
  • Selecting a major/concentration
  • Experiential learning opportunities (e.g. projects, micro-internships, for credit and not for credit internships)
  • Alumni/employer engagement connected to programing (e.g. mock interview days, job shadowing/mentorship, employer spotlights)
  • Support integrated into coursework and student experiences (e.g. BUSN201, BUSN610, BUSN614, etc)

Setting Expectations for Students Working with the Center for Career Readiness

The Center for Career Readiness is committed to supporting LeBow students equitably and effectively. To do so, we have established clear expectations regarding engagement, scheduling, use of resources and professional conduct.

Appointment Scheduling (Effective Winter Term 2026)

Center for Career Readiness appointments will be scheduled exclusively through Handshake. This approach allows us to standardize services and ensure fair access for all students.

  • Standard student appointment hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and appointments are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • All appointments must be booked through Handshake
  • Appointments are 30 minutes in length*
  • Students may not schedule more than one appointment per week
  • Appointments may be virtual or in-person, based on student preference and availability
  • LeBow’s Center for Career Readiness follows the University academic calendar. The office is closed during University holidays and official breaks when the University is closed.

It is the student’s responsibility to schedule their own appointment. Career advisors are not expected to book appointments on a student’s behalf.

*/ Resume review appointments with LeBow’s resume consultant are currently scheduled for 60 minutes.

Use of Resources and Professional Responsibility

To ensure equitable access to services, students are expected to treat appointments as professional commitments.

  • Students should arrive on time and be prepared for each appointment
  • If unable to attend, students must cancel or reschedule in advance through Handshake

Career advisors will notify the Director of the Center for Career Readiness if a student demonstrates a pattern of missed appointments or repeated no-shows.

Students with repeated no-shows will be required to meet with the Director before being permitted to schedule additional advising appointments. This process ensures accountability and responsible use of shared resources.

Employer and Alumni Contact Information

To protect privacy and maintain ethical engagement standards, the Center for Career Readiness does not provide students with direct names or contact information for employers or alumni.

This policy exists to:

  • Respect individual privacy and data protection standards
  • Prevent unsolicited outreach that could negatively impact institutional and employer relationships
  • Ensure contacts maintain control over how and when they engage with students

Employers and alumni may self-select to make their contact information available to students through their Handshake privacy settings. When contact details are shared in this way, students are welcome to reach out professionally and appropriately.

What Students Should Expect from the Center

The Center for Career Readiness focuses on career preparation and readiness, not last-minute job placement. Students should expect:

  • Coaching aligned with academic programs and career competencies
  • Support in building skills, experiences and professional identity
  • A shared responsibility for engagement and follow-through

Students are encouraged to utilize both the Center for Career Readiness and the University Career Center, as each office provides distinct and complementary services.

Requesting a Different Career Advisor

Career advisors in the Center for Career Readiness are assigned based on a student’s major or academic area of study. This structure allows advisors to develop deeper knowledge of industry trends, employer expectations, and career pathways specific to each discipline, resulting in more relevant and effective guidance for students.

This approach also ensures:

  • Consistency in advising and communication
  • Stronger employer and alumni relationships aligned to academic areas
  • More equitable distribution of advising caseloads

Requesting a Reassignment

Students who believe their assigned career advisor is not meeting their needs may request a review; however, advisor reassignments are not automatic.

To request a different career advisor, students must:

  1. Schedule a meeting with the Director of the Center for Career Readiness
  2. Explain the reason they believe the current advisor assignment is not meeting their needs
  3. Be prepared to discuss what type of support they are seeking moving forward

All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The Center reserves the right to maintain current advisor assignments when appropriate to ensure continuity, fairness and effective use of resources.

Important Note: Students are encouraged to make a good-faith effort to engage with their assigned career advisor before requesting a reassignment. In many cases, expectations, communication style, or advising approach can be clarified and improved through conversation.
