MS in Business Information Technology Curriculum

The MS in Business Information Technology curriculum combines coursework from LeBow and the Howley College of Engineering and Computing, giving you an interdisciplinary education at the intersection of business and applied information technology. The curriculum develops the business knowledge and technological skills needed to evaluate, implement and manage technology within organizations.

You’ll explore how information technology can solve organizational problems, improve business processes, support innovation and contribute to long-term transformation.

You’ll graduate prepared to:

  • Design, develop, and evaluate scalable, secure and user-centered digital platform solutions using full-stack development frameworks that meet organizational and stakeholder requirements.
  • Assess cybersecurity risks and implement governance, risk management and compliance strategies that protect organizational assets and align with legal, ethical and operational standards.
  • Apply artificial intelligence methods and tools to analyze data, automate processes and support organizational decision-making while considering model performance, limitations and responsible AI practices.
  • Evaluate and align information technology capabilities with business processes and operational objectives to improve efficiency, enable innovation and support organizational performance.
  • Formulate and justify information systems strategies and policies that leverage emerging technologies to achieve competitive advantage and guide long-term organizational transformation.

Course Highlights Include
IS 5610: Applications of Artificial Intelligence

This course covers various methods for developing artificial intelligence (AI) applications to solve real world problems. The underlying intuition of these AI methods (e.g., neural networks, constraint satisfaction, reinforcement learning) are presented in the context of real-world applications for students to learn to make decisions about when and why particular AI methods can be utilized to provide value to organizations and users. This course is delivered via lecture and readings, and assignments include analysis of existing applications and development of working demos of the main categories of AI methods.

IS 5617: Cybersecurity Foundations and Risk Management

Develop a risk-first cybersecurity mindset with NIST-aligned frameworks and ISO 27001 standards. Gain hands-on experience with Splunk, Wireshark, and endpoint protection tools while preparing for CompTIA Security+ and CySA+. Prepares students for roles such as Cybersecurity Analyst and Risk Manager.

IS 6680: Full Stack Development for Digital Platforms

Gain hands-on experience building modern web and mobile applications using full-stack technologies. Students will integrate cloud services, implement security best practices, and optimize performance. Projects emphasize scalability and real-world deployment.

MIS 6200: Aligning Information Technologies and Operations

Information Technology (IT) infrastructure must be aligned with an organization’s strategy and operations to ensure optimal benefits. This class uses the principles of DevOps to examine operational alignment for IT infrastructure. Students learn how different IT infrastructures are matched to different operational profiles to maximize effectiveness. Students will also be exposed to cross-domain alignment: the ways in which top-level IT and business strategies affect operations. This includes how IT strategy affects business operations and how business strategy guides IT operations and infrastructure. Finally, students learn how new modes of system delivery meet the needs of business operations in hypercompetitive environments.

MIS 6210: MIS Policy and Strategy

This course ties together concepts from different areas of management and the economic, behavioral, functional, and technical aspects of Management Information Systems (MIS). Students learn how to define the overall and context-specific informational needs of organizations and understand the role of MIS in meeting these needs. Different options are considered for matching MIS operations to the structures, strategies, and behaviors of organizations. Students will be able to analyze and propose solutions to management policy challenges within the MIS function.
