Whiteboarding with Zoom

Zoom offers a number of ways to replicate the traditional classroom whiteboard experience in a synchronous online class. Carefully review the options below and choose the method that best fits your situation.

Zoom Whiteboard Option for Pen-Enabled Devices

If you are using a pen-enabled device such as an iPad, Android tablet or annotation-capable laptop, the Zoom app has an integrated whiteboard feature you can use.

  1. While in a meeting, select Share Screen from the bottom toolbar.
  2. Select Whiteboard.
  3. Select Share.

Once you have finished using the whiteboard, you can save any displayed text as an image file using the Save option. This will place the saved file in your Documents\Zoom folder. You can also auto-save all whiteboards you create by enabling the Auto save whiteboard content when sharing is stopped option from the Whiteboard section of Settings on https://drexel.zoom.us.

Zoom iPhone/iPad Option

If you have an Apple device, you can integrate that into your Zoom meeting using the built-in iPhone/iPad option of the Zoom app. You will need to install a plug-in for this feature to work and your Apple device must be on the same network as your host Zoom computer. When using this option, we recommend installing the Microsoft Whiteboard app to your device which will simulate a whiteboard. Microsoft Whiteboard also allows the ability to save whiteboard screens as image files using the Export option.

  1. While in a meeting, select Share Screen from the bottom toolbar.
  2. Select iPhone/iPad.
  3. Select Share.
  4. From your Apple device, open the Control Center.
    • For newer devices, swipe down from the top of the screen.
    • For older devices, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  5. Select Screen Mirroring.
  6. Select Zoom-USERNAME.

When you are done sharing your Apple device:

  1. Open the Control Center.
  2. Select Zoom-USERNAME.
  3. Select Stop Mirroring.

Sharing a non-Apple Device in a Zoom Meeting

The Microsoft Whiteboard app is also available for Android devices. Android devices can be integrated into a Zoom meeting using the https://share.zoom.us website. You must have the Zoom app installed on your Android device first before attempting to integrate it into the meeting.

  1. From the Android device, browse to https://share.zoom.us.
  2. When prompted, enter the Meeting ID for the session and select Share Screen.
  3. Select Start Broadcast.

When you are done sharing your Android device:

  1. Select the red bar at the top of your phone screen.
  2. Select Stop.
