Abstract: I’ll provide an overview of qualitative research from the perspective of someone who was not formally trained in these methods and had to seek out a set of informal mentors to acquire skills that (somewhat) approximate the craft. Along these lines, I provide thoughts on pursuing case study research, analyzing qualitative data, how the review process differs between qualitative and quantitative work, and the challenge and thrill of setting up a “problem-focused” mentoring network for the purpose of acquiring a new (and very different) skillset long after doctoral training.
