How to Install Microsoft Remote Desktop

Microsoft Remote Desktop provides a user with a graphical interface to connect to another computer (virtual or physical) over a network connection from a remote location.

Windows 10 Users

Microsoft Windows has Remote Desktop Connections pre-installed. Follow the instructions below to install the latest Remote Desktop patches.

  1. Open the Windows menu.
  2. Select the gear icon to open Windows Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install any updates that appear, paying particular attention to any update relating to Remote Desktop Connections.

### Windows 7 Users

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7 after January 14, 2020. If you are unable to upgrade, follow the directions below to install the latest Remote Desktop patches.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select System and Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Change Settings in the left-hand column.
  6. Verify under Recommended updates the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates is selected.
  7. Select OK to return to Windows Update.
  8. Windows Update will automatically search for any needed updates. Install any updates that appear, paying particular attention to any update relating to Remote Desktop Connections.

### macOS Users
  1. Open the Apple menu and select App Store….
  2. Search for “Microsoft Remote Desktop 10”.
  3. Select Install when the application appears.
