Chief Economics Correspondent

Ben Casselman is the chief economics correspondent for The New York Times, where he covers the U.S. economy and economic policy. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, where he teaches economics reporting.
Before joining the Times in 2017, Ben served as chief economics writer for the data-journalism website “FiveThirtyEight,” where he contributed to award-winning projects on criminal sentencing, gun deaths and the 2016 presidential election. Prior to that, Casselman was a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where he won a Gerald Loeb Award in 2011 for his coverage of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and was part of a team that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.
A graduate of Columbia University, Casselman began his career as a reporter for the Salem (Mass.) News. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife.
