Forging Founders: Inside the Living Launchpad of Entrepreneurial Education

Traditional business education frequently relies on static case studies and theoretical lectures. At the Close School of Entrepreneurship, assistant teaching professor John Wilson, PhD, takes a fundamentally different approach — one built on immediate execution and fast application.

“If you’re waiting for a textbook publisher to write a guide on emerging business models, it’s going to take five years, and by then, the market opportunity has passed,” says Wilson, known to his students as “Doc John” and to his online audience as “The EntreProfessor.”

That drive to document real-time classroom experimentation led Wilson to launch his independently produced documentary series, “Forging Founders: Inspiring Founders in the New Era of Learning.” Created alongside filmmaker Isaac George, BS film & television ’25, during George’s Drexel co-op, the series offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at modern startup education.

An Unfiltered Look Behind the Classroom Doors

Unlike the curated and polished look of most official, college-based media, Wilson set out to record the unvarnished realities of an entire academic year. By publishing the documentary series independently across his digital platforms, Wilson provides an authentic look at the Close School ecosystem, showcasing the dynamic between educators, students, and the commercial market.

The production itself highlights the collaborative reach of Drexel’s signature co-op program. Wilson offered the six-month production residency to George, then an undergraduate student in Drexel’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.

“A typical day during co-op involved coming in early, setting up before classes - preparing the tripod and camera equipment,” George recalls. “We’d finish with the final class of the day, where I would shoot the session, and then I’d begin editing.”

George spent the first three months capturing raw classroom interactions, followed by three months compiling footage, adding post-production elements and structuring the final narrative. Managing a full-length series provided George with executive-level production experience that directly accelerated his career after graduation.

From Paperclips to AI Agents

Across its seven-part narrative structure, the documentary series captures guest speakers, industry operators and cross-functional mentors as they critique student ventures. Viewers observe student cohorts navigating real-time market experimentation across two distinct tracks:

  • The Fundamentals Track (“The Starter’s Toolkit”): Introductory students build foundational resilience through experiential challenges designed to overcome fear of rejection. Viewers follow students participating in the classic “paperclip challenge” — trading a single paperclip across Philadelphia for items of increasing value — while others conduct field research on local food trucks to analyze operating margins and supply chain economics.
  • The Advanced Track (“Entrepreneurship & New Technology”): Advanced students explore blockchain, digital assets and agentic AI, constructing autonomous software agents designed to execute cryptocurrency strategies.

We are applying emerging technologies like agentic AI in ways that commercial sectors were only beginning to discuss a year ago.

The Close School extends its scope beyond traditional startup launching; its curriculum equips students across disciplines with problem-solving frameworks. For student founders, the documentary series provides a narrative on managing risk, navigating market ambiguity and what goes into developing operational discipline.

The Educator as an Active Founder

What distinguishes Forging Founders from traditional academic coverage is its willingness to show the realities of venture creation in real time — not just for students, but for the educator leading the course.

The documentary highlights Wilson’s work as an active founder building an AI startup alongside his teaching load. When operational challenges arise in his venture, the film captures the real-world friction of founder negotiations, product setbacks and strategic pivots.

“I didn’t come to higher education for tenure,” Wilson says. “I came to help founders launch, grow and scale. My research consists of testing ventures in the open market to evaluate what actually works.”

This teaching approach redefines the educator as an active co-creator. The film captures the unseen hours of mentorship that define Close School’s culture: late-night strategy sessions, direct whiteboard reviews and quick recoveries after setbacks. That practical approach is amplified by Philadelphia’s startup ecosystem, providing a backdrop of grit and entrepreneurial resilience.

A Blueprint for Curriculum Innovation

Forging Founders provides an inside look at how Close School faculty are actively advancing business education through immersive, real-world application. By prioritizing rapid execution and market adaptability, Wilson’s independent series demonstrates what happens when an entrepreneurial mindset is nurtured inside a supportive incubator like the Close School.
