LeBow Students Partner With IRS to Offer Free Income Tax Assistance

February 05, 2009

During tough economic times, maximizing tax returns and saving money on assistance in filing taxes can make a big difference. Again this tax season, students from Drexel University's LeBow College of Business are partnering with the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to prepare income taxes and maximize returns at no cost for individuals and families with incomes of about $40,000 or less who do not plan to itemize deductions.

"About 35 student volunteers from LeBow College are completing VITA training with the IRS and are very well-prepared to help members of the community receive their maximum tax returns," said Jane Kaplan, an accounting instructor at LeBow College. "As a partner of the Philadelphia community, LeBow College of Business is pleased to have this opportunity to provide this service and give back to those who can benefit from this assistance, especially during tough economic times."

On Monday and Wednesday evenings from 4:45 to 8 p.m. starting in February and running through April 10, certified volunteers will prepare Federal tax forms and state forms for Pennsylvania and New Jersey by appointment only.

The student volunteers are participating in this program received training on the Link and Learn IRS Web site and on TaxWise software. These students scored 80 percent or higher on an IRS test of their tax knowledge and are now IRS-certified tax preparers.

"We are proud to join with the students at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business to offer complimentary tax assistance to residents of Philadelphia," said Glenn Rollins, Sr. Stakeholder Relationship Tax Consultant, IRS Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication. "These student tax preparers will be well-equipped to handle the various types of returns and help people file their returns accurately and on time."

This service will take place on Drexel University's main campus and is available by appointment only. For appointments, please call 215.895.0436.
