LeBow College of Business Partners with ALPFA to Launch Scholarship Program for Latino Students

May 13, 2010

Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business recently partnered with the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) to launch the ALPFA Cares Scholarship Program which provides up to three $10,000 scholarships to Latino students.

According to Ian Sladen, assistant dean for undergraduate programs for LeBow College of Business, “It is with great pleasure that we establish this scholarship program with our new partners at ALPFA-Philadelphia. ALPFA Cares Scholarship Program will assist high ability Latino scholars in achieving their goal of obtaining a top-quality business education at Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business.”

The program is an initiative to encourage Latino students currently pursuing an associate degree in a community college to continue their education and earn a four-year degree. Drexel’s partnership with ALPFA is the first time that the Latino organization has partnered with a local university and additional corporate sponsors to create the scholarship.

Students eligible for the scholarship include those graduating from a community college this spring and interested in transferring to Drexel University in fall 2010. As part of their scholarship agreement, students must continue their education in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, management, or related fields. Additionally, eligible students must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and become student members of ALPFA.

Sladen will appear on “Puerto Rican Panorama,” one of the longest-running Latino television programs on “6 Action News,” to discuss and promote the scholarship program. The program will air May 15 at 1:30 p.m., May 16 at 5 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., and May 17 at 3:30 a.m. Following those dates, the program can also be viewed Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday mornings at 8 a.m. at affiliate stations. Consult program guides for the channel listings.
