High School Students Gain Edge at Camp LeBow

More than 170 ambitious high school students from across the Greater Philadelphia area will spend part of the summer developing business skills at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business' Camp LeBow. Students will learn from renowned LeBow College of Business faculty, develop leadership skills and become versed in the many aspects of business that will benefit them when applying to college or seeking employment.

"The Philadelphia area has many talented high school students who will one day make exceptional business leaders," said George P. Tsetsekos. "Camp LeBow offers them the opportunity to hone their leadership ability and gain experience that will lead to more successful academic and professional careers."

Participants at Camp LeBow - which is held on Drexel's University City Campus - also learn how to work together in teams and compete in a business simulation contests. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place winners. Students who complete any Camp LeBow session will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward an undergraduate education at Drexel University. 

There are four specific Camp LeBow programs offered:

Camp Business is in its eighth year and sponsored by Commerce Bank. Students examine the disciplines of accounting, marketing, finance and management, and learn the core concepts of business including leadership, professional image, etiquette, team building and strategy. Camp Business sessions are held July 14 to 24.

Startup! has been running for four years, enables students to learn entrepreneurship within the context of a real company. Startup!, with faculty from the Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology, cultivates entrepreneurial skills that promote success in business and in life. Entrepreneurial topics examined include: strategy and market development, sales and customer service, product development and positioning, and proposal development and presentation. Startup! sessions run from July 14 to 18.

Camp Impact familiarizes students with essential stages of marketing: developing a target audience, creating a product, promoting it, and delivering a great customer experience. Students learn how to execute a major marketing campaign as well as techniques for making a winning presentation to colleagues or clients. Camp Impact concludes in a Board of Directors presentation in which students present before an expert panel of judges and was held from June 23 to 27.

Camp XChange enables participants to gain an overview of trading through firsthand experience in LeBow College's electronic trading lab. Students develop skills needed for careers in corporate financial management, investing and the public sector. They spend their mornings learn about trading in various markets including the New York Exchange and NASDAQ. Camp XChange culminates with a visit to the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, and was held from June 23 to 27.
