Zoom 5.0.0 Released

BY AL RIESS

April 27, 2020

Zoom released a major update to it’s desktop and Android applications on Monday, April 27, 2020. The Apple iOS update is expected a few days later once it receives approval from Apple. Zoom version 5.0.0 provides several enhancements including:

Security

  • Private chat is no longer possible between Drexel and non-Drexel, external participants unless you add those external users to your Zoom contact list.
  • If a host has the Embed password in meeting link for one-click join disabled under Settings on https://drexel.zoom.us, Zoom will no longer include the password in the URL when inviting new participants through the desktop application.
  • Zoom is moving to an upgraded encryption standard which offers increased protection of meeting data and resistance against tampering. Zoom 5.0.0 supports the new standard which will be automatically enabled for all accounts on May 30, 2020.
  • Phone calls to Zoom meetings are now protected with enhanced encryption standards.
  • The host can now report a user during a meeting using the Security toolbar button. This feature sends a report to the Zoom Trust and Safety team to evaluate any misuse of the platform and block a user if necessary.

Meeting Features

  • The Leave/End meeting options have been updated so that the pop-up no longer appears. Instead the choice is made using the End toolbar button.
  • Non-Drexel, external participants will be labelled as External during one-on-one chat sessions.
