The STEM-designated Master of Science in Economics at Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business prepares you to analyze complex economic challenges through advanced quantitative methods, economic theory and applied market and policy analysis. You’ll build the analytical and research skills needed for careers in consulting, finance, government, industry and international organizations, while establishing a strong foundation for doctoral study in economics, business, public policy, public health and related fields.

Inside the MS in Economics Curriculum
The MS in Economics curriculum combines advanced economic theory with rigorous quantitative analysis to prepare you to evaluate complex economic challenges across business, government and public policy. Through coursework in econometrics, mathematical economics and applied analysis, along with opportunities for research seminars and internships, you’ll strengthen your analytical skills while gaining experience applying economic concepts to real-world problems.
You’ll graduate with skills in:
- Advanced Economic Analysis: Students will demonstrate the ability to apply advanced economic theories and quantitative methods to analyze complex economic problems, utilizing econometric models and data analysis techniques to derive meaningful insights and policy implications.
- Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Graduates will develop strong critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills, enabling them to evaluate economic policies and their societal impacts, propose evidence-based solutions, and effectively address real-world economic challenges.
- Research and Communication: Students will acquire the ability to conduct rigorous economic research, including formulating research questions, analyzing empirical data, and interpreting results. They will also be skilled in communicating complex economic concepts clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Interdisciplinary Application: Graduates will be equipped to integrate economic principles with insights from related fields, such as public policy, health economics, and international trade, allowing them to address multifaceted issues in various sectors and contribute to informed decision-making in both public and private organizations.
Note: Beginning in Fall 2027, Drexel University will transition to a semester-based academic calendar as part of its broader Academic Transformation.

Common Questions About the MS in Economics
- What kinds of research opportunities are available in the MS in Economics program?
Students with interests in research who show the aptitude can be paired with faculty who have need for research assistance where research interests align. Furthermore, the Economics Seminar course provides an opportunity for all students to delve into current research in economics and how to go about writing a research paper.
- Can I pursue the MS in Economics if my undergraduate degree is in another field?
Absolutely. Incoming students with solid (intermediate level) economics ann math backgrounds (linear algebra and multivariate calculus) are preferred. However, students with strength in at least one of the two areas will be considered.
- What is the difference between an MS in Economics and a PhD in Economics?
The PhD in Economics is solely geared towards training students to conduct high quality academic research and takes, on average 6 years to comlete. The Masters program is for students who wishing to deepen their economics knowledge and skills either for the working world or to boost their preparation for entering a PhD program.
