Finance Major Curriculum

With the globalization of finance changing the banking and investments industries, it’s vital to understand the principles of finance, the operations of financial markets and ever-evolving regulatory impact on products, services and operations.

With the choices available to Drexel LeBow students to customize their finance degree and career focus, they’ll be able to choose to concentrate on financial markets, portfolio management, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, wealth management and more. For students who are more technology-focused, a minor in Business Analytics from Drexel LeBow or Data Science from Drexel’s College of Computing and Informatics can also be pursued giving finance majors a deeper understanding of the management, development and impacts of constantly evolving financial technology.

Our expert faculty have decades of experience in business and in finance, so they are able to understand how changes in business and in our society can impact the field of finance. Drexel LeBow is among the first schools in the nation to offer courses on the financial perspectives in the emerging cannabis industry and the role finance can have on climate change.

The real estate management and development major takes an interdisciplinary approach to the ever-expanding, complex field of real estate management.

Drexel LeBow offers a variety of minors and certificates to supplement your major, for both LeBow students and those from other Drexel colleges.

Drexel Co-op and Experience

Drexel LeBow Student on Co-op

Theoretical knowledge is vital, but by itself it won’t give you a full understanding of finance and global markets. Over 100 years of industry partnership has taught us the value of an immersive education. We focus on ensuring students have access to a wide variety of learning opportunities beyond the classroom to gain deep expertise, broad perspectives and the essential soft skills needed to succeed in business and in life.

Drexel Co-op

Through the Drexel Co-op program, finance majors alternate six months of classroom learning with six months of full-time professional experience through university-approved employers. With plans of study that allow for up to three co-ops, students can gain as much as 18 months of practical, hands-on experience in the workplace, applying what they’ve learned in real-world settings long before graduation.

Not simply limited to financial institutions, our students have done their LeBow  finance co-ops in a variety of organizations, locally and around the world.

Past  finance co-op placements include:

  • JPMorgan Chase
  • Susquehanna International Group
  • Morgan Stanley
  • BlackRock
  • Johnson & Johnson

Learn by Experience

In addition to the Co-op program, other experiential learning opportunities abound at LeBow, including consulting courses, case competitions, international residencies, research projects, industry thought leader events, alumni mentorship and more. Through projects made possible by the Dana and David Dornsife Office for Experiential Learning and Drexel Solutions Institute, our students apply their learning on real and simulated challenges, working with organizations domestically and internationally from Unilever, the Philadelphia 76ers, Boeing and PwC to nonprofit and governmental partners.

Dragon Fund

Our students manage a stock portfolio with actual dollars, not just a hypothetical fund that ends at the classroom door. The Dragon Fund is run by select students who have excelled in finance major coursework, many of whom have gone on to high-profile jobs in the investment field, private banking and wealth management with high-net-worth individuals.

Student Organizations

At Drexel LeBow, students have many opportunities to engage outside of the classroom through student-run organizations, connecting with a community that shares their major, their heritage or any of the other unique characteristics that unite our diverse student population. The opportunities to collaborate, network and engage are endless.

Broaden your financial knowledge and prepare for a career in finance by attending events, networking and participating in tournament events.

Drexel Women in Business strives to provide its members with resources and opportunities to succeed in business, with a focus on the female professional.

The Financial Literacy Group was created to promote financial literacy within both the Drexel community and the larger West Philadelphia community.

Careers and Network

There are a multitude of jobs available to someone with a finance degree in a wide range of jobs in many different career fields. Career opportunities for students studying finance include serving as a financial and credit analyst, budgeting officer and securities broker.
