Drexel Lebow’s sport business major offers students a variety of career paths to pursue including agent, facility manager, sport administrator and sport marketer, within an industry expected to exceed $83 billion in revenue by 2023. No matter the path students choose, having a solid understanding of all functional areas of business and how to apply that knowledge to the sport industry is vital.
The demands of the increasingly sophisticated multibillion-dollar global sport industry call for professionals who have strong academic credentials paired with strategic work experiences in sport organizations. Our sport business program is intended for students who plan to pursue careers with professional sports teams, collegiate athletic departments, sport media networks, sport marketing firms and other sectors of the sport industry.
Sport Business Major Curriculum
Housed in the AACSB-accredited LeBow College of Business, the BSBA in Sport Business directly applies the principles of business to the sport industry through advanced academics and experiential learning. The program offers business foundations and a sport business core with coursework in:
- Sport Leadership
- Facility and Event Management
- Sport Law
- Sports Economics and Finance
- Sport Marketing and Sales
- Media Relations
- Digital Media in Sport
In addition, elective courses allow for specializations paired with minors in legal studies, marketing, sport media production, entrepreneurship and more. Faculty and guest lecturers from leading organizations such as the NBA, MLB, AEG and the National Lacrosse League (NLL) discuss key issues, allowing students to think critically to solve real-world business challenges.
Beyond required sport-focused coursework in business, marketing, law, society and economics, Sport business majors can tailor their coursework to the career path they hope to follow. Just as the career options in the sports industry are endless, so are the courses students can take that will prepare them for a future in sports.
Drexel Co-op and Experience
Over 100 years of industry partnership has taught us the value of an immersive education. We focus on ensuring students have access to a wide variety of learning opportunities beyond the classroom to gain deep expertise, broad perspectives and the essential soft skills needed to succeed in business and in life.
Through the Drexel Co-op program, sport business majors alternate six months of classroom learning with six months of full-time professional experience through Drexel-approved employers. With plans of study that allow for up to three co-ops, students can gain as much as 18 months of practical, hands-on experience in the workplace, applying what they’ve learned in real-world settings long before graduation.
With LeBow’s optimal Philadelphia location near large sport franchises, our students have done their sport business co-ops locally and across the world in a variety of organizations. Past sport business co-op placements include:
- Philadelphia Phillies
- Philadelphia Eagles
- Comcast Spectacor
- Drexel Dragons TV
Learn by Experience
In addition to the Co-op program, experiential learning opportunities abound at LeBow, including consulting courses, case competitions, international residencies, research projects, industry thought leader events, alumni mentorship and more. Through projects made possible by the Dana and David Dornsife Office for Experiential Learning and Drexel Solutions Institute, our students apply their learning on real and simulated challenges, working with organizations domestically and internationally from Unilever, the Philadelphia 76ers, Boeing and PwC to nonprofit and governmental partners.
At Drexel LeBow, students have many opportunities to engage outside of the classroom through student-run organizations, connecting with a community that shares their major, their heritage or any of the other unique characteristics that unite our diverse student population. The opportunities to collaborate, network and engage are endless.
